Space and decisions!
-
How do y’all keep enough space to “put your horses up” on top of having space for foals? Also, how do y’all make the decision of who will stay and who will go?! I’m on a budget so probably can’t buy another stall package for a month or so! The real life ponies are requesting a barn full of hay

To help with barn space, I do pretty strict culling.
Pointed ponies must be at least 300pts or above before I buy them from auction or public sale. The younger they are, the more points they need to have (4yr with at least 300pts, 3yrs with 350, 2yrs with 400pts, etc).
My homebreds are culled on some different criteria for their lines- my mushrooms aren’t boosted so I don’t keep any spelds from that line or anything papered below A/Blue. Straight to the auction they go.
My 2 boosted lines- I keep the spelds because they have good PTs and will make good show ponies (and the core of my show herd once they are older and established). Ponies with PTs below 10.5 are spelded and auctioned.
I do not keep any colts or fillies intact if they do not test superior to their sire/dam. 2Gs must be A/blue and respective generations must always test superior- spelds usually are auctioned.
I also do a lot of profit breeding and dump the stud/mares/foals into auction. No testing done other than SBA. I convert the extra cash into IVs and hoard until I have enough for the next barn.
Hope this helps!TheBlueMoors ID 78

It does incredibly, thank you for taking the time to explain! I’ve kept some red/B colts only because I don’t have many blue/A babies right now but hope that will change in the coming seasons!! I have a herd of about 80 mares that are kept for showing/breeding but I’ll most likely wean those out as better mares are available. It’s kinda a slightly rough start, lol. How many months have you been playing on this server?Thanked by 1TheBlueMoors

Nice explanation @TheBlueMoors!
I cull based on both color and quality. I breed for livers and chocolate palominos so all of my foundation breeding mares must be ExPro/ExPerf and e/e sty/sty with DP being a huge bonus!
All of my 2Gs must pass SBA and must be either liver or chocolate pali. At the moment I am keeping both red/B and blue/A, but comparison testing all of my colts against their sire and only keeping the superior colts. Down the road as I build up my herd I will likely phase out the red/B 2Gs completely. Keeping mares in the pasture for a full 30 days gives you a nice breeding bonus and helps increase the number of blue/A 2G foals you get each season!
I also use 300pts as my threshold for buying show ponies and anything with over 300pts is usually spayed/gelded immediately to give them a training bonus! I also have one barn called Show Breed where I keep about 30 mares intact with lower than 300 pts. I mainly use these girls for embryos.Thanked by 1TheBlueMoors -
@arya2020, glad to hear it was helpful! Sounds like you have a good plan with your show/brood band- that's what I did with my core mares- I tried to gather as many pointed mares as I could so they'd make me money even in pasture. The beauty of this game is you can do whatever you want breeding wise! Some people breed for PTs, some people breed for color, some people go for the tallest or the shortest, heaviest or lightest. It's whatever rows your boat!
This is a pretty new server- I think it opened in... April? and I joined when it opened! I have been on the green server for over a year now so I had an idea of what I wanted (and needed) to do when this server opened up.
I also forgot to note- as my show herd builds up and gets older, I will start going through my 8,9,10 year old and look for those ponies who have leveled off. If they have leveled off and are placing in the bottom 1/2 of their classes, I cull those and send them to auction. I can usually get a younger and better pointed horse to replace that horse. As my 2Gs start producing more 3G horses and those 3Gs produce 4Gs and so on, I probably will start raising the minimum PT requirements for a homebred to stay in my show herds.
